STRONG SHOWING FOR MOSQUITO B BRAVES

The Braves, one of two BWI Mosquito B teams, are standing head and shoulders over the pack in their division. Led by a corps of reliable pitchers anchored by side-arm sensation Lucassie Moreau-Côté, the 12-1 Braves dropped their only game on July 21. Coach Marc Daoust has assembled a dynamic group of players and assistant-coaches who are ensuring baseball fundamentals and fun on the playing field.
Their most recent win, a 7-2 no-contest against the Lachine A’s on July 22, was settled quickly as RHP Marco Martincevic and LHP Louis Virgini displayed good control of deceptive fastballs. A hard-hit double to the center-field fence by Nathanael Empsall-Duke, cashing in Atom A call-up Cédrick Duguay from second base, was one of the game’s several highlights. As they settle in for the last stretch of the season, the Braves hold bragging rights over B rivals Cardinals, with a 2-0 record and key games to be played on July 28, August 4 and August 11.

ATOM ROYALS SAY GOOD BYE TO LEADER BELLFLOWER

The BWI Atom A team recently saw the departure of their unquestioned leader, Zachary Bellflower, whose solid play at third base and on the mound and mammoth home runs from the clean-up position will be long remembered by his teammates. Zach’s father, a ranking officer in the U.S. military living in Pointe-Claire with his family while pursuing a Master’s of Law at McGill, was recalled unexpectedly in mid-July. In his brief stay with the Atom Royals, Zach brought to the field a blend of power and determination unrivalled within the seven-team division. While no official record can attest to this, his last home run, hit on July 11, was most probably the longest one ever hit at Arthur-Seguin Park. Most importantly, Zach displayed an infectious love of the game that elevated his teammates’ play and has made coaching these Atom Royals a real joy.

In spite of a record of 4-6 (with two victories against LaSalle erased by their withdrawal from the league), the team has shown particular depth at the pitching position, with no less than seven players logging (successful) innings on the mound. It includes on its roster Evelyn Laferrière, the only girl playing Atom A ball in the West Island. A strong defensive effort in a tight, 3-1 loss to division-leading St-Laurent in the first game since Zach’s departure served notice of the team’s talent and resilience.

PEE WEE ROYALS UNDEFEATED

The West Island Pee Wee Royals are the uncontested leaders of their division, and form only one of two undefeated teams in the Lac St-Louis intercity league. With a record of 9-0-1, manager Mark Lague’s Royals offer a blend of power and speed that is leaving opponents with very little recourse. This highly talented team is led by catching stalwart Mosha Moreau-Côté, first-baseman David Fontaine, third-baseman Brendon Watt, and fireballer Logan Duff-Meadwell. Moreau-Côté leads the team in most offensive categories, while Fontaine’s superb athletic abilities have anointed him as a most dangerous threat from the lead-off spot. Watt will be easily recognized for his composure under pressure and timely extra-base hits, while closer Duff-Meadwell, with his trade-mark smile, has left no chance to opposing hitters. The team is now facing the loss of rookie Nolan Webber to a season-ending injury, but the Royals’ depth, surely unmatched in the Pee Wee A division, will provide the necessary foundation in their quest for a berth in the Provincial Championships.

Baseball West Island Shines Bright at the 2008 Baseball Quebec Gala Meritas

BWI was a shining light at the BQ Gala Meritas on Saturday night at Hotel Le Chantecler in Ste. Adele.

John Janiszewski, BWI Mosquito Convenor and Parks Scheduler, lead off the evening being presented with a Baseball Quebec Volunteer of the Year Award. John was awarded the Lac St. Louis Volunteer of the Year Award at the Lac St Louis Gala Meritas in September, and along with eleven other volunteers in Quebec, was awarded BQ's highest volunteer award.

On behalf of the BWI Board, Executive, and all BWI members, we thank John for his many hours of tireless volunteering (besides convening and scheduling, John also coached a Mosquito B team, assistant coached a Mosquito A team), and congratulate him on his award. The accompanying picture shows John being presented the award by BQ Hall of Famers Claude Piche & Claude Raymond. There is also a close-up of John with his trophy and the evenings program.

A former BWI standout, Matt Langton, was also part of the celebration. Matt won the "Jouer Elite de L'Annee", posting a 15-0 (!) record with the LaSalle Junior Elite Cardinals this year. He also batted over .340 for good measure. Congrats Matt! The accompanying photo shows Jacques Lanciault, Secretary General of the LBEQ, and Denis Boucher, former Major Leaguer and present President of Lachine baseball, presenting Matt with the award. There is also a picture of Matt and his mom Laurie celebrating the moment.

BWI Pee Wee "A" Player awarded bursary for John Rennie Sports-Etude Program

David Fontaine of Pointe-Claire was recently accepted in the John Rennie High School Sports-Option Program where he will be focusing on improving his baseball skills with baseball instructor Ian Jordan.

Ian Jordan, an ex-Major League player and current Major League Baseball scout was pleased with David's baseball talents, so much so that he has awarded David a bursary of $300 to help pay for the program fees.

David is 12 years old and has been playing baseball in the BWI organization since he was 5 years old. His favorite position is 1st base, his favorite team is the Los Angeles Angels and his favorite player is Vladimir Guerrero . When asked why he likes the game he replied "because it's a lot of fun, I love the sport, you're always learning something new." In 2007, David was selected as Best Team Player by his team the Pee Wee "A" Royals. David's future plans are to do well in school and to continue playing for Baseball West Island, and he would like to try umpiring to make a little money. BWI coach Mark Lague has coached David for the past three years, and spoke in glowing terms about David. "David is the ultimate team player. Everything he does makes the team better, be it inside or outside the lines. By setting a good example, he tends to become a silent leader on any team he's on. He treats every player on the team equally and with respect."

The entire BWI membership wishes David outstanding success in the Sports-Option program, and may he always find it exciting and fun to play this remarkable game.
